This manual does not claim to inculcate anything: it is not a textbook where the pupil learns his lesson in order to be able to recite it correctly. Initiation teaches us to think, and therefore to make the personal effort that leads to the elaboration of truth. The truth is never revealed to the Initiate, whose mission is to discover for himself the secrets that interest him. The Art to which he devotes himself requires that he know how to build the edifice of his own convictions according to his personal convenience.
He has complete freedom in this respect, as long as he builds solidly, with judiciously chosen materials, because not every stone is acceptable to the builder, who must test the cohesion of every block he uses. The same applies to ideas, where no concept should be accepted without examination.

Joseph Paul Oswald Wirth (1860-1943) was initiated into Freemasonry and became Worshipful Master of the Scottish Symbolic Grand Lodge, which later joined the Grand Lodge of France. Freemasonry made intelligible to its followers is an authoritative classic in three volumes.
